Last week I had the opportunity to make another trip to the Jersey shore with my family & good friends. Since so close by, I decided to sign up for another boat trip on the Osprey with Captain Bob woo hoo!!
This trip provided many photo ops, but my favorite was the amazing and graceful black skimmers. In the above photo, see that the lower bill is longer than the top. Also note how the wings, being quite long, extend beyond the back of the bird.
They are called skimmers for good reason. Black skimmers fly just above the surface of the water and skim the surface for fish. Surprisingly, their wings never touch the water. It seems like an inefficient way to fish, but it works for them!
So why fix something that ain’t broken? These birds are so graceful as they silently fly back and forth, skimming away for their dinner. They even skim together…
Synchronized skimming is apparently a THING! I could have watched these birds all day long. Wouldn’t it be great if we could all work together, perfectly synchronized? We all work hard at whatever we do. It would be great to have good company while doing it, right?!?
